In 2015 I started sorting out clothes in the Netherlands for refugees in Greece. After a few months I wanted to see with my own eyes where all those rompers and children’s clothes ended up and where they were apparently so desperately needed. In February 2016 I went to Greece for the first time with my mother (Corinne). It was heartbreaking. The intensity of the suffering broke my heart.
I also found it extremely inspiring to see how resilient these people were. Despite everything, they were often so positive and their hospitality and light energy touched me deeply. Although I already knew it, I fully experienced how happy giving makes me and how natural it is for me to help someone in need.
It has taught me to see life in a different perspective, namely that many things are not so obvious. For example, having a roof over my head, my family around me and my refrigerator being stocked. I am extremely grateful for the wealth in my life.
In daily life I work as a chef in a vegan restaurant, Van Planten. Cooking makes me happy. It is one of the ways to express my love and to make people happy. Cooking together has a bonding effect, even if you don’t speak each other’s language.
I also work as a project manager at People for People, an organization that helps as many people in need as possible in times of crisis in the world, regardless of their background. This way I can shape my involvement with refugees on an ongoing basis.
So for me it’s about sharing. Light and love become more when you share it and I like doing that!
